Child Car Seat Safety

Evans Firefighters work to safeguard all our residents – especially the littlest ones.  We’d like to help ensure a safe ride around town by correctly and securely installing child-safety seats – approximately 80% of child seats are installed incorrectly.

Evans Fire has certified car seat technicians on every shift, every day.  Free inspections are done at Station 2 – 2100 37th Street in Evans.  Please call us at 970-339-3920 x1 for an appointment to have your child’s car seat inspected and correctly installed.

Kids should ride in the backseat until age 13.  Those riding in the backseat are less likely to be injured or killed in a crash.  The center of the backseat is the safest place for a child.

Adult safety belts are only appropriate for passengers over 4’9” tall and weighing more than 80 pounds.  Until these milestones are reached children are safest riding in a size-appropriate child restraint seat.

When installed and used correctly, child safety seats and safety belts can prevent injuries and save lives. Approximately one-third of kids are in the wrong seat for their size & age.  A child riding in the wrong seat is more likely to be injured.

Colorado law, enacted on August 1, 2010, requires all children under age 8 to be properly protected in a child safety seat when traveling in a motor vehicle.

Avoid purchasing safety seats from yard sales, flea markets, second hand stores or when there is no known history of the seat. Seats that have been involved in automobile accidents are no longer considered safe.
