Fire Code Permit Process

This page is designed to help an applicant understand the construction review, permitting, and inspection process.

The City of Evans requires, and issues, building permits for various work/types of construction and uses a third party inspection group (Safe Built) for their plan review and inspection process.

The Evans Fire District is responsible for enforcing the fire code the City of Evans has adopted and, in some cases, has a parallel interest to the building code process.

To minimize the bureaucracy of obtaining a building permit, in most cases the Fire District receives copies of the plans/information that you submit to the City for a building permit. In some limited cases, additional information is required, or a building permit is not required. In these cases, the District will seek the information it needs from the applicant.

Because both the Fire District and Safe Built must conduct inspections, there is sometimes a need to set up multiple inspections, though we work with Safe Built and the City of Evans to minimize these events.

It is important to note that you must obtain approval from both Safe Built and the Fire District to complete your project.

Q & A

How do I apply for a permit from the Fire District?

There are applications for operational and fire protection system permits below. You only need to fill out these applications if your project has a fire protection system, or if your operation requires a special permit.

In most cases, your building permit and ultimately your Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) will satisfy the permit requirements.

What do permits cost?

In most cases there is no cost for a permit from the Fire District. There is a charge for fireworks permits, and certain, very complicated projects may require a plan review fee.

Can I submit my plans electronically?

You may submit your plans electronically; however they must meet the requirements of the fire code and must contain the same information (including cut/spec sheets) that are required for a paper submission.

For certain very complicated projects, or if the plans cannot be adequately reviewed electronically, you may be required to submit paper plans.

If you submit electronic plans, you will receive your comments imbedded on the original electronic documents.

What if I have a question about my project?

When do I need a permit from the Fire District?

In most cases, your building permit and ultimately your Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) will satisfy the permit requirements.

However, the following projects/operations/uses require a separate, operational permit:

  • Amusement Building
  • Carnival or Fair
  • Store or handle explosives
  • Outdoor Assembly of 1000 or more people
  • Use or handle pyrotechnic devices
  • Temporary Membrane Structures

Any of the following life safety/fire protection systems require the appropriate application (see the website) to be submitted with the plans:

  • Fire sprinklers
  • Fire Alarm
  • Fire Protection Water Supply
