Would increasing the number of volunteer firefighters reduce future costs?

Yes, volunteer firefighters are a very cost-effective way of providing fire and emergency services in communities like Evans. Each volunteer firefighter today costs about $4,000 in pension, stipend, equipment and training per year. This is far less than the approximately $70,000 per year for a full-time career firefighter. Because it takes six volunteers to equal the hours of coverage of one career firefighter the actual cost of each 24/7 position covered by volunteers is $24,000.

If approved the new fire district will continue the current volunteer firefighter program.
