The Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) is a series of laws designed to guarantee that the public has access to records at all levels of government in Colorado. Under CORA reports of incidents within Evans Fire District are public records. As such, any citizen may request a report. Fees associated with a records request are outlined in Resolution 2024-05, linked under Supporting Documents. Some information is protected and may not be released. A “public record” includes most writings made, maintained, or kept by our office. However, there are some exceptions concerning records made available under CORA.
Some information is considered confidential or is excluded from the Colorado Open Records Act.
Some examples of excluded public records include:
Criminal justice records or documents prepared for a criminal investigation.
Work product prepared for an elected official.
Trade secrets and proprietary software information, including programs and source code.
Our office will not provide social security numbers to the public.
If you wish to gain access to information and evoke the CORA law, then you must make a written request to the Administrative Office using the District CORA Request Form. You can submit your request form by mail or email, or hand-deliver it to our office.

To make sure that you receive the information you want please be thorough in completing the request form. Include a detailed list or description of the specific information that you are seeking. The more specific your request is, the faster we can complete it.
Our office will not ask you why you need the information. However, we may invoke clarification for your request in order to determine which documents are relevant and avoid giving you too much or not enough information.
Information can be shared in a pdf format via email or in hard-copy.
If you just want to view the information, please state that in your written request. Once the documentation has been gathered, you will be notified. We will then set up an appointment with you to come into our office to view the documents.
Any information that is confidential by law or is exempt from the Colorado Open Records Act will be removed from the documents that you view.
We have up to three working days to comply with your request. If extenuating circumstances exist, then we have up to seven working days to fill your request.
You will be notified when your request is complete.
Where the fee for a public record is specifically prescribed by Applicable Law, the specific fee shall be charged for hard-copies. If a fee is not specifically prescribed by Applicable Law, the District will furnish a public record for a fee of $0.25 per standard page for hard-copies. The District will charge the actual costs it incurs in having any copies made off-site by an outside printing facility. There is no per page fee for electronic format.
