Emergency Preparedness

Evans Fire District would like to remind all our residents that taking a few minutes now to prepare your family could make all the difference in a major weather event or other area disaster.

Make A Plan – If you have to evacuate your home how will you get out and where will you meet?  If you are unable to evacuate, where in your home will you be safe?  If your family is not together when a disaster strikes it is important to know: how you will get to a safe place; how you will contact one another; and how you will get back together.  Everyone in your household should understand the plan - practice getting to a safe place in your home and getting out of your home to meet at your safe place.  It is especially important to help children understand this plan and the importance of the safe meeting place. 

Build A Kit - A disaster supply kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.  You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last all members of your family for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days.

Keep in mind that basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days, a week, or even longer. Your supply kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages.

Emergency Sirens - Two emergency sirens are maintained in Evans to notify citizens in the event of an emergency. Typically these sirens are tested once a year. Prior to these tests, a notice will be placed in the Greeley Tribune and on the District Facebook page.

If you hear the sirens seek shelter immediately!  Siren testing is a great time to practice your family's emergency plan - what would you do if this wasn't just a test?

One of the most important things you can do to prevent being injured in a weather event is to be ALERT to the onset of severe weather. Most deaths and injuries happen to people who are unaware and uninformed. Stay aware, and you will stay alive!
